2016 cancer annual reports

Dear Colleagues:
This is an exceptionally exciting time in cancer research. Together, the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and Northwestern Medicine’s physicians and scientists are translating discoveries into new and promising approaches to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. We have made great strides in the past year, and I look forward to building on the knowledge and insights that enhance our ability to provide the highest level of effective, personalized care and support.
Lurie Cancer Center is one of only 49 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation recognized for their “scientific leadership, resources, and the depth and breadth of their research." As a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer, and the only member in Illinois, our doctors help develop the guidelines that are improving patient care and outcomes around the world. We are proud that cancer care at Lurie Cancer Center’s clinical home, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, has been ranked first in the Chicago Metro Region and Illinois for seven consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report.
Under the leadership of Eric Neilson, MD, Dean of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and Dean Harrison, President and Chief Executive Officer of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, the growth of Northwestern Medicine is a catalyst for progress. Our shared vision is focused on accelerating scientific discovery; improving the delivery of compassionate, state-of-the-art cancer care; training and mentoring the next generation of leaders; and outreach to the communities we serve. Through the Clinical Cancer Center Executive Council, Lurie Cancer Center is leading efforts to increase collaboration and maximize impact across the expanding health system.
The opportunities for progress have never been greater. With the continued support of our institutional partners and the expertise of our dedicated faculty and staff, Lurie Cancer Center is well-positioned to improve treatment, outcomes and quality of life for our patients.
Sincerely,
Leonidas C. Platanias, MD, PhD
Director, Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center
Jesse, Sara, Andrew, Abigail, Benjamin and Elizabeth Lurie Professor of Oncology
